ABOUT THE
SOCIETY
2007-2008 Board of Directors List
2006 Financial Statement
Founded in New York City in 1966, the Victorian Society in America
is dedicated to fostering the appreciation and preservation of our nineteenth-century heritage as well as that of the early twentieth century (1837-1917). The
Metropolitan Chapter, oldest of numerous chapters now flourishing throughout
the country, is an independent organization affiliated with the national
society.
Our chapter's
activities include an active program of free lectures by experts in
architecture, decorative arts, fine arts, landscape, literature, and cultural
history. We organize tours of special exhibitions, neighborhood walks, and
visits to historical sites as well as private homes in greater New York and
nearby regions such as the Berkshires, the Hudson River Valley, Fairfield
County, Long Island and Cape May. Many of these activities help support
scholarships to the national Victorian Society Summer Schools in the United
States and England.
The
Metropolitan Chapter actively promotes preservation of the incomparable wealth
of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century historic districts, individual
landmarks, interiors and civic art in the New York City area. Past campaigns we
have supported include the Jefferson Market Library, Tweed Courthouse, Sailors
Snug Harbor, St. Bartholomew's Church, The Sherman Monument, Soho-Cast Iron and
Ladies' Mile Historic Districts, and the Seventh Regiment Armory interiors. The
Chapter also sponsors an annual awards program to recognize outstanding
preservation and scholarly projects.
Members
receive invitations to our lectures, tours, receptions, annual meeting, and
other special events, along with reduced admission fees.
If you are
interested in any aspect of the Victorian era we invite you to
join us.
The Metropolitan Chapter would like to thank our lifetime members, patrons, and sponsors for their generous support.
The Metropolitan Chapter has a dedicated Board of Directors.
